FIRSTLY, WHAT IS A “CARBON FOOTPRINT”?

Your carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are generated by your actions on an annual basis. Greenhouse gases are produced as a by-product by many processes that we rely on daily – from driving a car to creating cement that is used for buildings.

The average global carbon footprint per person is roughly 4 tonnes annually.

However, the average footprint for a person living in a developed country, including the UK and US, is closer to 16 tonnes per year – the equivalent of burning 37 barrels of oil!

This number might seem crazy, but it all comes down to what we use and where we source our products – this includes animal meat and dairy, burning petrol when driving and flying, and buying the latest smartphone manufactured in China. All our actions have a carbon footprint attached.
